NU Food is Taking Popcorn Back

March 12, 2021

If you’ve thought about cutting back on animal products in your diet, you’ve probably discovered just how many little things contain dairy that you didn’t even realize. With so much now going on our “do not eat” lists, it can all become a little overwhelming, but don’t get discouraged!

Even if what seems like most items on our grocery shelves have hidden dairy ingredients, there are still plenty of plant-based dairy products out there, especially depending on where you shop—for example, all NU Food products, like our queso, only contain plant-based ingredients! Though it may seem difficult at first, cutting out at least some dairy products from your diet will have your body, and the environment, thanking you.

The Problem with Butter

Like most “unhealthy” foods, butter, in all likelihood, won’t absolutely destroy your health when eaten in moderation. However, “in moderation” is becoming a harder and harder goal to reach. Many unwanted ingredients are added to keep processed foods on the shelves longer. Processed foods are also made with the intention of being as inexpensive as possible to produce, so additives are piled on in order to ensure the products taste decent enough. Due to this, it’s becoming more and more important to keep an eye out for unwanted and unnecessary ingredients whenever you can.

Butter, that one ingredient that usually makes popcorn taste so delicious, is incredibly high in fat and high in calories. According to Healthline, butter has 102 calories for every tablespoon, and 63% of its fat is saturated fat... not to mention, butter is about 80% fat in total!

Studies have shown a 27% lower cardiovascular risk rate after partially replacing saturated fat with polyunsaturated fat in the average person’s diet. For this reason, it's important to follow the USDA and HHS recommendation of ensuring saturated fat is only 10% of your daily calories. This can be a difficult adjustment, but it’s worth it for your health.
